Numerous studies have shown the benefits of using active learning pedagogies in classroom and laboratory settings beyond traditional lecture and recipe-based lab experiences. Active learning approaches, if effectively facilitated by the instructor, lead to gains in student achievement, allow for additional learning outcomes that are often crucial to success in future careers, and improve inclusivity in the classroom. Since there is no one right way to use active learning, this book is authored by 29 instructors from a wide range of institutions including community college, undergraduate colleges, research-intensive universities, and minority-serving institutions. By providing a broad range of ways to incorporate active learning into lecture and lab, the authors hope to inspire instructors who do not yet use active learning to do so and to provide those already using active learning ways to improve their instruction
